Beginnings of Ostrzeszów date back to the 13th century. It was granted civic rights in 1283. During the reign of Casimir III of Poland a castle was built in Ostrzeszów, which formed a part of a defense line on the Polish – Czech border of that time. From the 16th until the 18th century Ostrzeszów was a city "starosty", a seat of a county and lands tribunals. The city was burned down by Swedes during the Swedish Deluge of 1656. In 1793, as a result of the second partition of Poland, Ostrzeszów became part of Prussia. During the annexation period, under a German name Schildberg, it was a county town. It was also an important centre of Protestantism ‏(Poles and Germans)‏. After World War I the town of Ostrzeszów returned to the territory of Poland.
